Bummer Vibes Festival

Spring Break presents BUMMER VIBES FESTIVAL at The Croatian Club this Saturday February 18.

Summer Vibes Festival | 16 January 2011 | Newcastle Australia

Last year there was a festival called Summer Vibes. It was awesome. I can’t do it again. I wanted to briefly, but realised that anything and everything would just be shit after it. I also went to a few other festivals and checked out a few other festival lineups, and realised that shit is the new black, so I guess you can’t get too bummed about this. It’s not that the lineup is bad, it’s just not that great. It will probably rain, too. This is Bummer Vibes. February 18, Croatian Club Newcastle.

Tickets are going on sale probably by the end of the week at oztix probably if I can be bothered filling out another email attachment and sending it to them, and I guess they’ll send some tickets down to Newcastle and we’ll put them at the Croatian Club and Emma Soup and maybe somewhere else for $10…

Spring Break Festival 2011

Spring Break started in 2008 as a weekly night in Newcastle, to give the underground bands in our scene a regular place to play and hang out, and a chance for Newcastle kids to see some of the more interesting acts from around the world.

Last year we celebrated our favourite season with an all day festival of 20 of our favourite bands from our scene and a whole days drinking in the sun, for a measly $10. It went so well that we turned it into a series – “Spring Every Season” – and it was followed by the totally massive Summer Vibes, Totally Autumn and Winter Chills Festivals.

The Spring Every Season Cycle is about to complete itself for 2011, and to celebrate, we are returning to our roots!

That’s right, 20 bands, including a selection of the finest from our own scene, and a couple of damn interesting guests: we’re honoured to be joined by Krautrock pioneer DAMO SUZUKI from German 1960s-on psych legends CAN!!!! In Newcastle for the very first time, Damo will be joined on stage by veteran collaborators THE HOLY SOUL and some super special guests from Newcastle too.

And it’s gonna be a measly $10 again! So you can save your dosh for a shit ton of Zamkowes to drink out in the sun. Here’s the lineup.

DAMO SUZUKI (GERMANY) & THE HOLY SOUL (SYDNEY) & SPECIAL LOCAL GUESTS

JOINED BY OUR VERY OWN FINEST:

BARE GRILLZ // ALPS // TEEN AX // IN THE DOLLHOUSE // THE NUGS // POST PAINT // DRILLBIT // PHOBIAC // THE SI CLAROS // POLYFOX AND THE UNION OF THE MOST GHOSTS // SWEET TEETH // HOPES // LENIN LENNON // HANDSOME // VULTURE CULTURE // THE MERMAIDS // AITӒH // BORIS YELTSIN

SUNDAY SEP 18. 1PM – MIDNIGHT. CROATIAN CLUB, WICKHAM.

$10 Entry.

No presales. No fuckwits. Just awesome folks. We love you. Thanks to all the bands and all the kids and PAVO.

xx SPRING BREAK

Crab Smasher Melbourne Tour 2010

Marnie Vaughn chats with the president of her fanclub.

Crab Smasher are heading to Melbourne for some shows this weekend, not really in support of anything but certainly promoting love and tenderness! However, for those keeping score, they have a new 3″ CDR out on CURT called The Doctor Is In… Over His Head out in late March, they’ve recently recorded a bunch of new material, including a cover of the X-MEN animated series theme song for a new compilation coming out through Lesstalk Records, and a really spiffy new track called Skin Destruction will appear on the fifth volume of the New Weird Australia compilation series.  So there.

On Thursday February 11 you can catch the band at the Old Bar at 74-76 Johnston Street Fitzroy from 8pm, with Penguins, Spitfire Parade, and The Bunyip Moon.

On Friday February 12 you can catch the band doing a live set on 3CR radio. Not sure what time. Just listen.

On Saturday February 13 there is much to take in, so take a deep breath! You can catch the band for an early set at the last ever Summer Winds Festival in Albert St Park in Brunswick. It starts at 10am, Crab Smasher are playing early, but if you’re sticking around you can catch the likes of Prehistoric Fuckin’ Moron(s), Gauntlet, Psychward vs. Tea and Sympathy Symphony, Gauntlet, Lost Animal, Eko Eko Azarak, Either/Or, Matthew Brown, JK Fuller, Avatron, Repairs, Pissypaw, Murrggh’urr, Hissy Mearky, Chrome Dome, Yakks, MV, Omen, and i’m sure heaps more. All ages welcome.

Later on in the day from 2pm at CrashbangFuckyourhead at 43 Pender st Thornbury, there’s an afternoon of Newcastle Noise worship with Crab Smasher, Drillbit, Mitchell Brennan, and John Butler Fucks Kidz performing heavy heavy sets of ear destroying sound ruffage. All ages welcome.

Rounding out this ridiculously ambitious day is the Eternal Youth Carefree Cleanness launch spectacular at Loophole from 7pm, where Crab Smasher and The Welcome Fight will support the mighty Go Genre Everything as they launch their new album, which is awesome, and when Go Genre Everything launch a new album, they really LAUNCH IT. Its on High Street in Thornbury and you need a ticket to get in. If you haven’t got one, email Go Genre Everything here if you’d like to get one. You have to ask or you’ll never get one.

Finally as Melbourne get sick of Crab Smasher’s one trick, they open up for their guitar hero Popolice, with Winterplan and The Analyte at The Empress on Sunday February 14, from 8pm.

And then they drive home, maybe just maybe Grant will let everybody stop at Dog on the Tuckerbox for magnums.

Tapes, Breaks, and Skinny Old Men

This Saturday at Arthive Gallery in Newcastle there’s an awesomely noisy gig featuring local JJJ celebrity Cock Safari, and a rare appearance from Drillbit, with special guest from Brisbane, Unique Oil Free Air. Also, if you demand it, Anal Cum Wolf may perform.
Entry is by donation, so cough up some coins cheapskates.

This Is Not Part 3

This Is Not Art is coming up, and there is always heaps of awesome unofficial programming happening around town as well, so once again, the fine folks at the Noise Machine label are presenting This Is Not Part! This year the event has moved venues to The Croatian Wickham Sports Club, so hopefully we can avoid the fistfights and bad blood of last year. There’s a diverse mix of bands ranging from the pounding distorto-breakcore of Drillbit, the psychedelic space grunge of Go Genre Everything, the posi power violence of Michael Crafter, the whaley drone pop of Alps Of New South Wales, and the multi headed noise beast Rotted Crow who only ever play wheelchair accessible shows and will perform as the house band on the Friday Night.
It’s happening over two nights, with both shows starting  at 7pm.
